Drumheller

Drumheller Hoodoos

When visiting Drumheller you need to stop off at the unique Hoodoos. The loop takes about 5 minutes to walk and while doing so be careful because the soft sand gets a little slippery. These hoodoos are formed over hundreds of years through erosion from freezing, frost, melt and wind. Over time, the sandstone erodes into chimney-like formations that remain standing because the hard rock “hat” keeps it from completely eroding away. Roughly every 100 years it is said that the structures lose roughly 4 feet.

Horsethief Canyon

When visiting Alberta everyone always wants to go to the rockies to see the scenery and they usually miss out on the vast landscapes the province has to offer. Drumheller is one of my favourite spots to visit because it really makes you feel as if you’re on another planet! This land once covered in jungle and also under a shallow sea is now filled with deposits of fossil and dinosaur bones dating back to 75 million years ago. Horsethief Canyon got it’s name back in the western days where there were thousands of horses roaming free belonging to individual ranchers. Legend says the horses that would enter the canyon would return carrying a different ranch brand hence the name “Horsethief Canyon”

The parking lot is easily accessed and has tons of room for vehicles as big as RV’s so is super easy to park in. This trail is rated moderate on AllTrails and is a 0.8km out and back. May through October is the best time to visit and is popular for biking, hiking and running.

Royal Tyrrell Museum

The Royal Tyrrell Museum is a super cool spot to visit while you’re in Drumheller. The coolest part about the museum in my opinion is how many of these dinosaur bones were found IN Alberta. This is a great place for a family outing, dates and friend visits where you can spend hours wondering all the exhibits. Pricing varies between $20-$50 and is suggested you purchase online ahead of time so you can ensure your entry.

This place was all vibes inside. We were a little weary when first deciding to eat here because there is a small choice for menu but we figured it must be good because it was busy!

What we ordered:

  • Pulled Pork sandwich 5.5/10 - I personally enjoy my pulled pork sandwiches with a bbq sauce where as this a little watered down and very salty. There was a lot of potential in this and maybe it was just an off day but unfortunately we were not very happy with this one.

  • Beef n’ Cheddar sandwich 7/10 - This sandwich had tons of flavour, with tons of toppings.

  • Orange Drum Soda Works drink 8/10 - This soda was so light and full of flavour I bought two more! Currently you can only purchase these drinks in Drumheller, though they are in the process of expanding to Calgary and Banff. This company launched in 2023 and I’m glad I was able to try them out at the beginning of their journey.
